Sonya Jehan Biography

Sonya Jehan is a Pakistani actress who works in Bollywood. She is granddaughter of famous singing actress Noor Jehan and film producer Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. She is best known for playing the protagonist Mumtaz in the one of the most expensive Bollywood films till then - Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story (2006). Though the movie flopped in Indian box office, it was declared a hit in Pakistan. She also played supporting roles in Bollywood movies – My Name is Khan and Khoya Khoya Chand, apart from Hollywood film - The Reluctant Fundamentalist, directed by Mira Nair. She is to make her Pakistani debut through the upcoming flick - Ho Mann Jahaan.

 

Her maiden name is Sonya Rizvi. She changed her name to Sonya Jehan in honour of her grandmother Noor Jahan. She was born into a filmy family to Akbar Hussain Rizvi and French mother Florence Rizvi on 24 April 1980. Her brother Sikander Rizvi is also an actor. She is the niece of singer Zille Huma and cousin of actor Ahmed Ali Butt. She graduated in design from Central St Martins College of Art and Design.

 

Sonya made her film debut with Bollywood historical romantic saga - Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story (2006). She was paired with Kabir Bedi, who played Emperor Shah Jahan. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office failure. This movie is known to be the last work of Naushad as a music composer. Then she played a pivot role in Sudhir Mishra's romantic drama Khoya Khoya Chand. She played the role of an American Muslim professor Haseena in Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer My Name is Khan. Sonya is also an hotelier who owns French restaurant Cafe Flo in Karachi.
