Sisir Mishra Biography

Sisir Mishra is a veteran filmmaker associated with Odia films. He is a film director and screenwriter. "Bheegi Palkein", "Samay Ki Dhara”, "Billoo Baadshaah”, "TADA" and "Aseema" are some of his famous and highly acclaimed films made in Odia language. In 2018, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri for his overall contributions towards Odia cinema. He is also a recipient of Nitai Palit Award, the Most Prestigious Award given by Professionals of Oriya cinema, and Jayadeba Puraskar in 2006 by Orissa Government, for Lifetime Achievement in Oriya Cinema. Chalachitra Jagat Pratibha Samman – 2011, Oriya Cinema Gourav 2012 and Chalachitra Jagat Pratibha Samman – 2011 are other major honours received by him.

 

Sisir Mishra was born in Bomkei of Brahmapur in Ganjam district of Odisha. His father Purushottam Mishra was an engineer by profession, who worked with British government, during their rule in India. Sisir Mishra holds Bachelor and Master’s degree in science. He started his profession as a physics lecturer after studies. However he left his profession to pursue his ambitions in film to become a filmmaker. He moved to Mumbai in 1965 and started his film career as an Assistant Director in Bollywood. He worked under Mehboob Khan during his early days. Later he worked as an assistant director under Bollywood director Jyoti Swarup.

 

He later moved to his hometown and started his film career with Odia films in the 1970s. He was most active in the 1970s and 1980s. He delivered many hit films such as Sindura Bindu, Suna Sansaara etc, and has also directed a few Bollywood films. He directed Bheegi Palkein (1982) starring the real-life couple, Raj Babbar and Smita Patil.
