Shrabani Deodhar Biography

Shrabani Deodhar is a successful and talented film director associated with Marathi cinema. She is one of the most successful female directors of Indian film industry. Her debut film, Lapandav (1993) won National award for best film in Marathi language. Sarkarnama (1998) and Lekhru (2000) are other major works. She won Maharashtra state award, Filmfare and Screen Awards for both these movies. Dekhaa Jaayega (2015) is her recent film. She also directed one Bollywood film with Karishma Kapoor playing the female lead - Silsila Hai Pyar Ka in 1999. However the movie was a box office failure. Sata Lota Pan Sagla Khota and Penchaan are other Marathi films. She most recently worked for the film - Sugar, Salt Ani Prem. But later the film was directed by Sonali Bangera.

She was born into a Marathi family on June 12, 1962. She came from a non-filmy background and had not received any training at all. Both her parents are doctors. She got married to cinematographer Debu Deodha. That’s how she got opportunity to learn more about films and film making. Persuaded by her husband, she joined appreciation courses at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Her husband also assisted her for her maiden project, Lapandav (1993) which won National award for best film in Marathi language.

She also scripts films. She scripted and directed the Bollywood film - Pehchaan: The Face of Truth in 2005 starring Vinod Khanna, Rati Agnihotri and Raveena Tandon. Prior to Pehchaan, she has directed one Bollywood film - Silsila Hai Pyar Ka, while Karishma Kapoor was enjoying no.1 actress of Bollywood fame. But the movie was a major flop, though its songs got noticed. Chandrachur Singh played the male lead. Though she gained success through Bollywood films, she is a popular director of Marathi films. She currently serves as a creative director for Star Pravah. Her daughter Sai Deodhar is a Marathi film actress.
