Shoba Chandrasekhar Biography

Shoba Chandrasekhar is a playback singer, director, writer and producer associated with south Indian cinema. She is also a Carnatic singer and also known for her philanthropic activities in Chennai. She predominantly works in Tamil. She is the wife of popular filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar and mother of popular Tamil actor Vijay, with whom she has shared screen space for a few TV ads. S. A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha have been instrumental in grooming Vijay’s career in the mid-1990s and have launched him in a series of movies like 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu, followed by Sendhoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva, and Rajavin Parvaiyile all directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar. Now Vijay is one of the top stars of Tamil cinema. Shoba has acted as a writer and producer for many of her husband’s films.

She took formal training in Carnatic music from Shri Meenakshi Sundaram. Later she studied music from Tamil Nadu Government Music College, where she got opportunity to learn Carnatic music from Vidwan T.M. Thiagarajan and the instrument Veena from Kalpakam Swaminathan. Now also she is a learner of Carnatic music and currently takes lessons in Carnatic music from Brinda Thiagarajan – daughter of Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam. She started her professional career as a light music singer associated with many troupes. Later she got opportunity to sing in movies, apart from live concerts in Carnatic music.

Since her marriage with the ace film director Shoba Chandrasekhar, she got fully involved with the film field as a producer and writer. She writes scripts for many of the movies directed by her husband and acted by her son. The couple had two kids of whom they lost a daughter aged 2. As a film producer she has done over 10 films and wrote stories for about 50 movies. She also directed two films Nanbargal and Innisai Mazhai, where her husband worked as associated director. Nanbargal released in 1991 starred Mamata Kulkarni who later moved to Bollywood. The movie with Vijay as lead actor was a box office hit.
