Shaji N. Karun Biography 
Shaji N. Karun is a critically acclaimed filmmaker of Malayalam who works most on offbeat movies. His movies have won numerous National and international awards at many film festivals and award functions. His debut film Piravi (1988) won the Caméra d'Or - Mention d'honneur at Cannes Film Festival in the year 1989. Other most noted works are Vanaprastham (1999) and Kutty Srank (2010) which won many National awards. He was the Premiere Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and has also served as Executive Chairman of International Film Festival of Kerala. He is married to Anasuya Warrier, daughter of P. K. R. Warrier, noted social activist and author.
Shaji N. Karun was born on January 1st, 1952 as the son of N. Karunakaran and Chandramati in Kollam. Later the family moved to the capital city in 1963. He studied at Palkulangara High school and became graduated from University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Later he took diploma in Cinematography from Film and Television Institute of India. He started with Diploma film, Genesis in 1974 (directed by Rahul Dasgupta) which won numerous awards. Next year he passed out winning President’s medal. In 1976, he returned to Thiruvananthapuram and was appointed as film officer in the newly formed state Film Development Corporation. During this time, he began his long term association with filmmaker Aravindan. He started his career as a cinematographer and won National award for 1979 movie, Thampu in Black and white category.
His debut movie was Piravi released in 1988 which won Caméra d'Or (Special Mention) at Cannes Film festival. He has won 7 National awards till now. He won National award for best feature film twice – Vanaprastham and Kutty Shrank. Piravi also won him best film (as a producer) and best director award. Swaham won Special Jury mention in 1995.
