Savithri Sreedharan Biography

Savithri Sreedharan is a stage and film actress belonging to Malayalam entertainment industry. As a film actress she is best known for playing the role of lovable ‘Umma’ (mother) in the highly acclaimed 2018 Malayalam film, Sudani From Nigeria. Her character name is Jameela in the movie, and it’s one of the memorable mother character on Malayalam screen in the recent times. She is an accomplished and experienced theatre artist who made a late entry to films. She has done several bit roles on screen earlier since late 1980s, but earned a late recognition in 2018.

Savithri owns more than 40 years of experience in Malayalam theatre. She received this much acting experience from Kozhikode theatre. Her co-star in the movie, Sarasa Balussery also belongs to same theatre and owns this much experience. As of now she has made more than 1000 stage appearances, in association with K. T. Mohammed’s Kalinga, Kozhikode Chirandana, Sangamam and Stage India, and has played many powerful roles on stage. She received Kerala state award for best theatre artist twice in 1977 and 1993. She has stopped theatre career 7 years ago.

She marked her film debut with M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s Kadavu. Her entry to Sudani From Nigeria has a long story. When she attended the film’s audition she was not satisfied. Yet she got through the audition. Though she wanted to leave the project, she was convinced by a group of young people and taught her dialogues. She was confused if audience would accept senior characters on screen. But the result was overwhelming, and after the film release, she became a household name of Kerala.
