Saroj Khan Biography

Saroj Khan is one among the best choreographers of Bollywood all time. She is most popular for giving dance steps to Madhuri Dixit. The big hits of Madhuri Dixit were directed by Saroj Khan, whom she sees as mentor. Biggest break of Madhuri Dixit’s career is Ek do teen song, choreographer Saroj Khan and she won her first Filmfare awards for this song of Teezaab.  Other huge hits of Madhuri - Dhak Dhak Karne Laga of Beta and Choli Ke Peeche of Khal nayak  are also choreographed by Saroj Khan. At present Saroj Khan holds the record of maximum awards at Filmfare for best choreographer, followed by Farah Khan.

Saroj Khan has won it 8 times till now and is the only person to hold a hat-trick in this award category. Those winning songs are Ek do teen char of Teezaab, Na jaane kaha se aayi hai of Chaalbaaz, Humko Aaj Kal Hai Intezaar of Sailaab, Dhak Dhak Karne Laga of Beta, Choli Ke Peeche of Khal nayak, Nimbooda nimbooda of Hum dil de chuke sanam, Dola re of Devdas and Barso re megha of Guru. It’s really mere co-incidence that all her winning numbers either belong to Madhuri Dixit or Aiswarya rai, except Chaalbaaz song of Sridevi. Most surprising fact is that those two Bollywood divas has shared the same screen space and danced together only once and that particular song was choreographed by Saroj Khan and she became winner this time too.

Saroj Khan has choreographed more than 200 movies till now. Before doing choreography for movies, she used to be one among those background dancers who dance behind hero and heroines in film sequences. In that way, she has danced for many popular numbers of black and white movies of 50’s.  Later she became assistant dance director for a few movies. She became an independent choreographer, with Geeta Mera Naam (1974). Yet it took more than a decade to get good work and get well noticed. Talents of dancing queens, Sri devi and Madhuri Dixit helped a lot in grooming the career of this great artist too. Her other big hits include – Mr.India, Nagina, Chandini, Thanedaar and now the latest, Ghulaab rang.
