Saroj Dey Biography

Saroj Dey was a famous filmmaker associated with Bengali cinema. Daak Harkara  (1958), Je Jekhane Dariye (1974) and Kony (1984) are his most memorable films. He won National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for 1984 film Koni. The movie starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Sriparna Banerjee was an adaption of a Bengali novel written by Moti Nandi. Dey got involved with movies since the golden era of 1950s and was associated with films till 1980s. Sagarika, Shilpi, Je Jekhane Dariye, Headmaster, Kanna, Sankha Bela, Bilambita Lay, Koni and Swati are among his major hits. He passed away on 26 November 1997.

 

Saroj Dey was born in 1921 in West Bengal. He was involved with the cultural group, Agragami – a group of folm directors before his debut with films in the mid-1950s. He made his directorial debut in 1955. His film Daak Harkara (1958) was shown at Venice Film festival and also won National award for best regional film in Bengali language. With this movie, he rose to the position of the talented directors associated with Bengali film industry. Since then he has given many memorable movies to Bengali cinema. Daak Harkara (1958) and Nisithe (1963) were made in association with Agragami.

 

He worked as an assistant director of Bengali cinema in the early 1950s. He worked as the assistant director of the movies - Vidyasagar (1952) and Sabar Uparey (1955). Apart from directing movies, he has also written screenplays of several movies, including his national award winning movie – Kony. Je Jekhane Danriye is among his career best, and the movie starred Kaberi Bose, Dipankar Dey and Mahua Roy Chowdhury in lead roles.
