Sarita Choudhury is an English film actress who played significant roles in Indian director Mira Nair’s directorial ventures - Mississippi Masala (1992), The Perez Family (1995) and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996). Her full name is Sarita Catherine Louise Choudhury born in August 18, 1966 in London. She was born of half Bengali-Indian and half English descent. She played lead role in 1992 romantic drama, Mississippi Masala. She played the role of Princess Tara in the controversial movie, Kamasutra.

Sarita, though born in UK has ancestral roots in Bengal, India. Her father Prabhas Chandra Choudhury is a scientist, who originally hailed from Bengal. Her mother Julia Patricia Spring belongs to Jamaica. After their marriage in 1964, they got settled abroad. Sarita was born on August 18, 1966. She has two brothers. She studied Economics and film at Queen's University in Kingston. She was working as a waitress at Manhattan's East Village to earn her livelihood when she got her film offer. Mississippi Masala was her debut feature film in which she played female lead. It was a passionate love story between two persons belonging to two races – African American and Indian American. Denzel Washington played male lead. She received her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card for this role. Even while the film was running in theatres, she worked as a waitress. After that she was regularly featured in many movies of Mira Nair.

She played Pakistani country-western singer in her second release, Wild West. She played the role of a lesbian mother in Fresh Kill and a rape victim in adaptation of ‘The House of the Spirits’. A Perfect Murder, 3 A.M, She Hate Me, Just a Kiss and Lady in the Water are other noted works. She also appeared in the television series - Homicide: Life on the Streets, playing the role of Dr. Kalyani.
