Sarika Biography

Sarika is a national award winning actress who works for commercial films as well. She is better known as ex-wife of actor Kamal Hassan and their daughters – Shruti Haasan and Akshara Hassan are known names too. Shruthi Hassan is a successful actress and Akshara Hassan is to debut soon. In year 2000, she won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for the film Hey Ram, directed by Kamal Hassan. In 2005, she won best actress award for her performance in Parzania, where she played the role of a Zoroastrian woman who loses her child during the 2002 riots of India. Sarika was popular during 1980’s where she acted as leading actress in many movies. During 90’s she moved on to character roles.  

Sarika was born to a Marathi family in New Delhi on 3^rd June, 1962. Sarika started her film career as a child actor with the name Master Suraj. During that time, she enacted the role of boy onscreen. In the 1967 musical super hit Hamraaz she appeared as the daughter of Raj Kumar with name Baby Saritha. As a leading actress, Geet gaata chal opposite Sachin was her biggest break. After that, she acted in a series of movies with Sachin, both Marathi and Hindi. They had a brief relationship as well, though they later broke up. She had a brief relationship with actor and model Deepak Parashar too, before knowing Kamal Hassan.  She married Kamal Hassan in 1988 and gave her career a short break. After their divorce in 2004, she returned back with powerful performances and bagged a national award as well.

In her movies of 1980’s, she was mostly casted as a modern girl with western culture. Yet she had a few movies, where she acted as simple Indian girl or woman. She has acted in movies like Dil Hi Dil Mein (1982), Satte pe satha, Jyoti Bane Jwala, Anpath, Devata, Plot No. 5 , Sharada, Shriman Shrimati , Yeh vaada raha, Teesri Aankh , Meharbani, Yeh Kaisa Insaf?, Kranthi, Aasman, Bin Phere Hum Tere, Griha Pravesh, Jaan-E-Bahaar, Raakhi Ki Saugandh, aani Dushman, Dil Aur Deewaar, Tik...Tik...Tik and Raj tilak. Most recently she was seen in Yash Chopra’s Jab tak hai jaan.
