Sabrina Dhawan Biography

Sabrina Dhawan is a screenwriter and film producer from Delhi. She made her debut as a screenwriter and was also seen in a cameo role of a wedding guest in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding in 2001. She is now working on the film script, to develop it as a play, apart from The Bengali Detective, for Fox Searchlight. In 2000 she directed and produced one short film – Saanjh - As Night Falls, which was awarded the Best of the Festival at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films. Audience Award at Angelus Awards and "Most Original Film," by New Line Cinema at the Polo Ralph Lauren New Works Festival in 2000 are other honours received by the short film. It was her work as a student, as a part of academic studies.

 

Sabrina Dhawan was born in the year 1969 in London, England. Sabrina Dhawan owns an academic career and has exclusively taught at filmmaking labs across the globe, apart from writing for corporate world including Disney, HBO, ABC Family and 20th Century Fox. She currently serves as Associate Professor and the Area Head of Screenwriting at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.

 

Her school and college education were completed at Delhi and UK.  Later she graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate Film Program in 2001 and the same year she made her film debut as a screenwriter through Monsoon Wedding. Cosmopolitan (2003) and a series of short film series - 11'09"01 September 11 (2002) are other noted works as a screenwriter. She has also co-scripted Bollywood films – Kaminey and Ishqiya. She is married to screenwriter Steve Cohen since 2006 and the couple is now settled in New York City with her son, Kabir. Her husband passed away in 2012.
