Sabitri Chatterjee Biography

Sabitri Chatterjee is a veteran Bengali actress who spent more than 5 decades in the industry. Most recently she was honoured with Padma Shri Award in 2014 for contributions in Film arts. She received BFJA Award for Best Actress in Supporting Role in 1971. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting in Bengali theatre in 1999 and honorary doctorate from Kalyani University in 2012 are other major honours received by her. Currently she plays various roles in television series and often appears in Bangla movies. She is one of the stars of the mega soap opera Sonar Harin. She appears in Jol Nupur and Joto Hashi Toto Ranna on Bengali television right now.

 

She has been a close of friend of Uttam Kumar and they were paired for the first time for the movie - Basu Parivar (1952). Later they worked together in Lakh Taka, Kalyani, Anupama, Raikamal, Nabojanma, Punar Milan, Marutirtha Hinglaj, Raja-Saja, Dui Bhai, Bhranti Bilas, Momer Alo and the last one Nishipadma in 1970. With 1980’s, she reduced her screen appearance. Later she concentrated on to her television career as well.

 

Sabitri was born on 21 February 1937 in Kamalapur in Comilla District of present day Bangladesh as the youngest of 10 sisters. Her father worked in Indian Railways. During the partition of Bengal, she was sent to Kolkata for safety and thus she got opportunity to work in films. She was associated with theatre group Uttar Sarathi as a stage actress for the play, 'Natun Yahudi'. Later she played the same role onscreen. Pasher Bari (1952) and Subhada (1952) are her early appearances. She was paired with Uttam Kumar with Basu Parivar (1952) and after that a series of movies were produced in this combination.
