S. Saravanan Biography

S. Saravanan is a cinematographer and film director based in Chennai. He predominantly works in Tamil film industry and has also taken Malayalam, Telugu and Sinhala assignments. As a cinematographer he has done 30 films, and has directed one movie – Silambattam in 2008 with Silambarasan and Sneha playing the lead roles. Mostly associated with mass entertainers of Vijay and a few movies of Kamal Hassan, he has also done the camera work of a few Malayalam films starring Suresh Gopi such as Smart City, The Tiger etc. He marked his Sinhala debut in 2017 with the movie – Dharmayuddhaya, and Pakka in 2017 is his last released film. He is married to actress Sangita of Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala and Poove Unakkage fame. In fact Saravanan did the camerawork of Poove Unakkage.

S. Saravanan was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He completed his Diploma in cinematography from Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu. He is associated with film industry since early 1990s, and initially he worked as an assistant cameraman under P. Selvakumar. He turned a full-fledged cinematographer with Tamil movie, Amma Ponnu in 1993, and has completed 25 years in his career as an independent cameraman in 2018.

The following year he got his first big break through Vikraman’s Pudhiya Mannargal and his work was well-appreciated. It was followed by Stri, Poove Unakkaga, Selva and the megaproject, Suryavamsam directed by Vikraman which was a huge blockbuster. After the huge success of the film, he never turned back, and he received numerous offers from film industry down south. Vikraman was the film director which helped him to gain foot in the industry and later he worked with director Suresh Krissna five films in a row in the 1990s. As a cinematographer, his best works include - Poove Unakkage, Suryavamsam, Thirupaachi, Thirupathi etc.
