S. N. Lakshmi Biography

S. N. Lakshmi’s full name is Sennalkudi Narayana Thevar Lakshmi. She was a south Indian actress with notable supporting roles, mostly portraying mother and grandmother kind of roles. Lakshmi acted in more than 1,500 films and 2,000 plays and is a recipient of Kalaimamani and Kalaiselvam awards. She started her career as a group dancer in Chandralekha and has about 6 decades of acting experience in film industry and theater.

 

Lakshmi was born to Narayana Thevar in 1927 in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. She was born as the 13th child to her parents. She left home at the age of 11, as she felt that she was not given deserved attention in her family. She was brought up in a bad financial condition. After the death of her father, the family moved to their village town of Sennalkudi to Virudhunagar where her mother worked in a small hotel to earn a living. She also worked in a temple. Her neighbour, a dancer, helped Lakshmi join a drama troupe. Young Lakshmi easily took up steps and thus she travelled from place to place as a theater artist. In one such return, the dance troupe left her with a family to put her in a train to Chennai. But somehow she lost her way and one lorry driver helped her to reach Gemini studios. It took 8 years for her reunion with the family.

 

She joined Gemini studio with a monthly salary of 150. She also got a rendered home along with 4 other girls. She worked under difference drama troupes and entered films as well. Server Sundaram was her big break to Tamil film industry. Lakshmi has been a part of nearly all of Kamal Haasan productions, Thevarmakan and Veeramandi being the noted movies. She has also appeared in many television serials. She was unmarried.
