Ruchir Joshi Biography

Ruchir Joshi is a noted filmmaker and journalist from Kolkata. He is the son of famous Gujarati writer and dramatist Shivkumar Joshi. As a writer, Joshi is best known for his debut novel titled The Last Jet-Engine Laugh (2001). The book was a big hit in the global literary circuit. He is also a journalist who works as an editor apart from writing columns for many leading Indian publications including The Telegraph, India Today etc. He made a film - A Mercedes for Ashish on the subject of Traffic situation and urban mess in modern-day Delhi. He made the first film - Egaro Mile in 1992. His time is divided between London and Delhi since 1990s.

He was born in 1960 in Kolkata, and he is of Gujarati origin. He was born to the renowned writer and dramatist, Shivkumar Joshi – the winner of several prestigious awards of Gujarati language like Kumar Chandrak, Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak etc. Following his father’s footsteps Ruchir too chose the literal path, and became successful. Ruchir was brought up in Kolkata, where his father was involved in textile business and literature and stage activities. Joshi made the first film - Egaro Mile in 1992 and his first book - The Last Jet-Engine Laugh was published in 2001, which earned him international acclaim. His second novel was based on Kolkata, his city during the Second World War.

He started his journalist career in the 1990s writing columns for various dailies. He moved to Delhi in 1997 and since 2007, his life is spent between the cities Delhi and London, associated with his literal career and film making. He edited Electric Feather: The Tranquebar Book of Erotic Stories (2009), India's first anthology of contemporary erotica. He also performed as a stage actor for English play called You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
