Ranjit Mallick Biography

Ranjit Mallick is a veteran actor associated with Bengali cinema. He is an Indian sheriff known as a blogger too. Amader Songsar, Guru Dakshina, Sathi, Interview, Shatru and Mouchak are some of his noted Bengali movies. He is a recipient of Kalakar awards and Banga Bibhushan in 2012. His daughter, Koel Mallick is also a leading actress in the Bengali film industry. Noted film producer Nispal Singh Rane is his son-in-law. Ranjit started his film career with the film Interview (1971) directed by Mrinal Sen, and has spent almost 4 decades in the film industry. He is retired from film scene now.

 

He was born in Kolkata on 28 September 1944 into Mallick Bari of Bhowanipore. He is nicknamed Ranju. He completed his advanced studies from Ashutosh College and Shyamaprasad College. He received his first break to Bengali cinema in 1971 and his first film role was offered by Mrinal Sen. Very soon he turned a popular romantic hero in the 1970s, and towards the end of his career he played character and supporting roles. In the 1980s he got success as an action hero and in the 1990s he moved to character roles.

 

As an actor his performance is best known for the movies - Mouchak, Devi Chaudharani, Raag Anuraag, Sayang Siddha etc. He got opportunity to work with many prominent film directors of Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 1980s. He got opportunity to do a brief role of a reporter in Satyajit Ray’s 1990 film - Shakha Proshakha. Currently he has retired from film scene, and busy with his blogs. He was honoured with Banga Bibhushan in 2012 for his contributions to the field of cinema.
