Ramji (cinematographer) Biography

Ramji is an ace cinematographer who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. He has been associated with ace film makers of the industry - Sangeeth Sivan, Selvaraghavan and Ameer Sultan for many projects. He is a resident of Thanjavur who played basketball for long 17 years before his foray to films. In this talented artist’s opinion, Cinematography is the simplest of all languages. P.C Sreeram is his mentor. He has worked as the cinematographer of many landmark films like Aayirathil Oruvan, Parutheeveeran, Ram, Irandam Ulagam and the recent blockbuster Thani Oruvan.

In the childhood Ramji used to watch films. But he never thought of a career ‘behind the camera’. He started his career by working under N. K. Viswanath in the 1980s. One day he happened to meet P.C Sreeram, under the suggestion of one of his friends. He worked as an assistant of Sreeram since 1989 and learnt the nuances and techniques of cinematography. But he couldn’t understand the techniques behind this art. Later Sreeram’s assistants - Anand, Jeeva, Prabhu, Muthukumar and Thiru also helped him to learn a lot of things. He worked under Sreeram in the 1990s for many movies like Thevarmaghan, Thiruda Thiruda, Gopura vasalile, Meera, Amaran etc.

As an independent cinematographer, he started his career in 1996 with the movie – Vallal. Since then he has also done Malayalam and Hindi movies, apart from Tamil movies. He worked with director Ameer Sulthan since his debut film - Mounam Paesiyadhae. Later they worked together for the movies - Paruththi Veeran, Ram etc. Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, Ek – The Power of One, Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne, Supari and Click are some of his Bollywood works. Thani Oruvan – is one of his best works in the recent times, shot in Black & White and Colour frames. The cinematographer used Arri Alexa 435 extreme in Thani Oruvan.
