Ram Sethi Biography

Ram Sethi is a veteran actor associated with Bollywood since 1970s. Sethi played Amitabh Bachchan’s side kick in numerous blockbusters like Zanjeer, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Namak Halaal, Kaalia and Yaarana. Known as Pyarelal in Bollywood he has played the role of a photographer of many of Bollywood movies. After a break of long years he returned to entertainment world through Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey in the supporting role of Rehman Chacha in the year 2010. However he got noticed for an ad of Hero Maestro scooter in 2012. He was 73 then. In 2015 he was seen in a character role in Raj Kumar Hirani’s PK and he received overwhelming response from audience who loved him to see on big screen again. Hirani approached the actor after seeing him in the ad.

Ram Sethi, also known as Pyare-laal entered film scene in the year 1969. He came to Mumbai in 1962. Delhi is his native place. He was born into a family of 9 siblings. He started off his career as an assistant director to Ravi Tandon. Though he met Ravi Tandon in 1964, it took a few more years till he got job under him. Later he got associated with Prakash Mehra for more than two decades as an assistant and in between he played a few character roles for his films. While at Mumbai he stayed with Shabana Azmi's cousin Ishan Arya who was a renowned cameraman. Though the name ‘Ram Sethi’ many not click one’s memory easily, his old pictures definitely do it. During his early days he worked for documentary films made by G R Sethi, Satyendra Goel and S Sukhdev.

Apart from an actor and assistant he has also played the roles of writer and director for Bollywood and was active in the industry till late 1990s before he took a break. He has worked with two generation of film artists of Bollywood. Ghungroo, starring Shashi Kapoor was his directorial venture. The movie was not a big success at box office. As an actor he took a break from the industry with Salman Khan starrer Judwa in 1997. After that he returned with early 2010s.
