Ram Mukherjee Biography

Ram Mukherjee – a member of the famous Mukherjee-Samarth film family is a film producer. Famous film actress Rani Mukherjee is his daughter. Thus he is related to Yash Chopra’s family, as Rani is married to Yash Chopra’s elder son Aditya Chopra. His father Ravindramohan Mukherjee along with his uncle Sashadhar Mukherjee founded Filmalaya studios and under this banner they produced many successful films starring his nephew Joy Mukherjee and others. Ram’s wife Krishna Mukherjee is a playback singer. His son Raja Mukherjee is also a Bollywood director.

Deb Mukherjee, Rono Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, Shomu Mukherjee, Shubir Mukherjee, Kajol, Tanisha and Ayan Mukherjee are other prominent members belonging to Mukherjee-Samarth film family. Nutan, Tanuja, Mohnish Behl etc are a few more members belonging to the same family. The famous Ganguly family is also related to this family. Sashadhar Mukherjee – father of Joy Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee was Ram’s cousin. Thus Kajol and Rani Mukherji are second cousins.

Ram Mukherjee is known as the film producer, director and screenwriter of Bollywood. He directed the movies - Hum Hindustani, Ek Bar Mooskura Do and Leader during the first phase of his career. On the film sets of Ek Bar Mooskura Do, Tanuja fell in love with Shomu Mukherjee – its producer and got married. Thus Samarath family got related to Mukherjee family. After a break, Ram returned to films as a director and producer with early 1990s, though he couldn’t gain recognition.

He also launched his daughter in movies through 1996 film - Biyer Phool. He also produced Rani Mukherji’s Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat – her first Bollywood film, which was a commercial failure. Leader starring Dileep Kumar and Vaijayantimala is his best known movie as a screenwriter and director. But the movie too was a commercial failure.
