Ram (director) Biography

Ram is a Tamil film director and actor best known for the National award winning Tamil movie - Thanga Meenkal released in 2013. The highly acclaimed movie received three prizes at the 61st National Film Awards including Best Tamil film award, though it was a box office failure. Ram also played lead actor’s role in the movie. Ram earlier assisted many top Bollywood film directors before making his first independent film, Kattradhu Thamizh in 2007. The film with Jiiva and Anjali playing pivot roles, though commercially not successful, was critically acclaimed. Taramani is his upcoming project - a love story set in the backdrop of the IT professional services industry in Tharamani. Andrea Jeremiah and newcomer Vasanth Ravi play the lead roles in this movie.

 
Ramsubramaniam is his full name. He started writing stories while doing his PG at Madras Christian College. He worked under film director Thangar Bachan as an assistant and later worked under Bollywood directors - Rajkumar Santoshi and Govind Nihalani and also under Balu Mahendra, though never as an assistant. He worked under Rajkumar Santhoshi for movies like Pukar (2000) and Lajja (2001) and also co-scripted the movies as well.

 
He started working on his debut movie in 2006 and the movie was titled Tamil M.A at first. The movie was renamed as Kattradhu Thamizh and took Jeeva as the lead actor. Though the movie was a commercial failure, it gave him multiple nominations for best film, direction, script and story at Vijay awards. His second movie - Thanga Meengal won national award for best Tamil film, apart from Vijay awards. It was the only Tamil film selected to Indian Panorama in IFFI, Goa.
