Rajendra Gupta Biography

Rajendra Gupta is a veteran actor of movies as well as Indian television. He is most popular for portraying the double roles of Pandit Jaganat and Shani in Doordarshan’s top rated fantasy serial during 1990’s – Chandrakanta (1994). He appeared as Geeta’s father in India’s super hero serial, Shaktimaan (1998). As a film actor, his most memorable performance is Lagaan. He has done numerous character roles in Hindi films. He is a successful theatre artist also who studied from National School of Drama in 1972.

Gupta was born in a business family in Panipat where his father runs a woolen textile industry. He did his graduation from Kurukshetra University. But he was not at all interested in joining his father’s business firm and his interests were drama and acting. He married Veena, a Christian and his family was against the marriage. Gupta and his family moved to Bombay in 1985 and started working in Doordarshan serials. Three years later, he entered movies in character roles. In 1990, his name was included in the Limca Book of Records for appearing in the most number of television serials. Till 1990, he appeared in about 40 serials. A few of them include - Kahan Gaye Woh Log, Mirza Ghalib, Talaash, Bharat ek khoj, Nukkud and Intezaar. Though he was a familiar face during early 1990’s, it was the fantasy serial, Chandrakanta that helped him to gain quick attention from viewers. Saaya is another noted work for which Gupta won RAPA Award in 2000.

Later he appeared in television serials like – Raavan, Parsa, Balika Vadhu, Rehna hai teri palkon ki chhaon me, Banoo Main Teri Dulhan, Kuch is tarah, Aashirwaad, Choti Si Aasha, Chidiya Ghar and Kahaani Chandrakanta Ki where he reprised his role played in the original. He has directed stage plays - Sarphire / Jaheez Hatyare, Dikhti..Khoob Ho! and Sooraj Ki Antim Kiran Se Sooraj Ke Pehle Kiran Tak. He has also performed as a stage actor in all these three plays. He has appeared in Bollywood movies like Guru, Deewar, Krishna cottage, Tum bin, Mission Kashmir, Dil kya kare and Mumbai se aaya mera dost.
