Raj Chakraborty Biography

Raj Chakraborty is an actor and director of Bengali cinema. Before entering cinema, he was active with Bengali television. He has done 18 tele films for television. As a film director, most of his movies are south Indian remakes. He has successfully remade Tamil films like Kaathal, 7G Rainbow Colony, Chennai 600028, Singham, Ko and Engaeyum Eppothum to Bengali with titles, Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, Prem Aamar, Le Chakka, Shotru, Kanamachi and Bojhena Shey Bojhena respectively. He has also remade a few Telugu hits like Gamyam and Bunny with the names, Dui Prithibi and Challenge respectively. He has won Anandalok Awards for best director continuously for four years from 2008 to 2011. The movies are Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, Challenge, Le chakka and Shotru. Bojhena Shey Bojhena earned him BJAA awards for best upcoming director and best director award at Telecine Awards.

Chakraborty was born on 21 February 1974 in Halisahar in West Bengal as the son of a college professor, Krishnashankar Chakraborty. He has 4 siblings and was born in a middle class family. He graduated from RBC College, Halisahsar. He started his career as an actor. But when he found this task to be uneasy, he turned a director. He became an assistant director of Arindam Dey in 2000 where he worked for six years. After that he directed his first individual tele film - Nawder Chaand. Its success prompted him to direct numerous tele films, reality shows as well as talk shows for television. Zee Bangla's famous laughter show Mirakkel and the dance program Dance Bangla Dance, are a couple of his successful associations with television.

As a film director, his debut movie was Chirodini Tumi Je Amar (2008), starring newcomers Rahul and Priyanka. Though it received mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a hit at box office. The movie was a remake of Tamil hit, Kathal telling the romance of teens. Thus began the successful career of Raj as a Bengali film director.
