Rabi Ghosh Biography

Rabi Ghosh, also known as Robi Ghose was a comedian of Bengali movies. Though his versatile acting talent and flexibility in handling roles, he has stunned viewers and critics alike in various kind of roles. He frequently appeared in great film maker, Satyajit Ray’s movies. He was a successful television actor and theatre artist also. Abhijan (1962), Aranyer Din Ratri (1970) Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980), Goopy Bagha Phire Elo (1991) and Padma Nadir Majhi (1993) are the noted works of this comedian. He has directed two movies in his career - Nidhiram Sardar and Sadhu Judhishthirer Karcha. He took part in Berlin Film Festival as the lead actor of Satyajit Ray’s Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne, the landmark movie of his career. The event took place in the year 1970.

 

He was born on 24 November 1931 in Kolkata. His real name was Robi Ghosh Dostidar. He completed his matriculation from the South Suburban Main School in the year 1949. He completed graduation from Asutosh College. He worked in in Bankshal Court for 8 years from 1953 to 1959. His first marriage was with actress Anubha Gupta, but she died at a younger age. Later Rabi married Baishakhi Devi in 1982.

 

He has been associated with theatre for a long time. He has been a student of Utpal Dutta’s Little Theatre Group. Director Aurabinda Mukhopadhay noted his performance in the play, Angar which paved him the way to movies. Surprisingly his outstanding performance in the same play gave him Ultorath Award in the year 1960. Tapan Sinha's Galpo Holeyo Sotti and Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1968) established Rabi as an actor in Bengali movies. Success of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne prompted its film maker to make its sequels and all became successful too. He along with Tapan Chatterjee played the lead role of Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne in the third sequel released in 1992. The film was scripted by Satyajit Ray and directed by Sandip Ray. He founded theatre group “Chalachal”. He has also appeared in Bengali movies - Padi Pishir Barmi Baksha, Ajker Nayak, Hansuli Banker Upakatha, Apanjan, Galpa Holeo Satyi and Kichukkhan.
