R. Aravindraj Biography

R. Aravindraj is a film director and screenwriter associated with Tamil cinema, since mid-1980s. He has directed 8 films up-to-date and most recently made his acting debut through Adhe Kangal in 2017, playing a negative character. He made an impressive debut as a director with 1986 film, Oomai Vizhigal and later directed the films, Uzhavan Magan, Thaai Naadu, Sathya Vaakku, Thanga Pappa, Karuppu Nila, Musthaffaa and Irandu Mugam. His debut film with Vijayakanth in lead role was well received and later he continued making similar kind of action entertainers.

Aravindraj joined film industry in the 1980s. He rose to fame with his debut film, Oomai Vizhigal released in 1986. This film was an expanded version of the Short film, Murder Echo made by College students. This crime-action film also starred Arun Pandian, Karthik and Chandrasekha in pivot roles. The movie told the story of a journalist making an investigation into the case of missing girl and it became trendsetter, with many other directors following the same suit. This action masala entertainer was a huge hit and the director continued making similar movies with Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj etc in lead roles. In most cases, the movies fared well at box office too.

He enjoyed success throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. His 1995 action drama, Musthaffaa (1996) starring Napoleon was a box office failure, which discouraged the director a lot. He cancelled one announced project and went on a sabbatical. Later he got busy with television shows, before he returned back in 2010 with Irandu Mugam after a long break of almost 15 years. The film released to mixed reviews and performed below average. He shot one movie with his daughter in 2013. The movie is still unreleased.
