Prema Narayan Biography

Prema Narayan is a former Bollywood actress and beauty queen. She was the Miss India first runner-up in 1971 who went on to represent India in 1971 Miss World contest. Narayan had a successful Bollywood career, and is best known for her roles in ‘Amanush’, ‘Ghar’, ‘Manzilein Aur Bhi Hai’ and ‘Maa Bahen Aur Biwi’. She was active in Bollywood till mid-1990’s in dancer’s roles. She received a Filmfare nomination for best supporting actress for her role in 1976 movie, Amanush – the action drama of Shakti Samanta known for Uttam Kumar’s Bollywood appearance. She has played a hot girl in several B-grade masala movies of Bollywood. She became active in film industry soon after Miss India contest.

 

Prema Narayan was born in Andhra Pradesh on April 4, 1955. She was a teacher at a convent school at Mumbai and did part-time modelling as well. She became runner up in 1971 Miss India contest which opened her doors to Bollywood. She was cover paged by almost all leading female magazines. She was one of the earliest Indian models who entered Bollywood after winning a beauty pageant. Yet, she is mostly known for supporting roles and sizzling dance numbers on screen.

 

She was first offered a role by B.R. Ishara, but refused, because of his “reputation”. “Ma, Bahen Aur Biwi” in 1974 was her debut movie. Later she appeared in movies like Balika Vadhu, Hote, Satte Pe Satta, Ustadi Ustad Se, Umrao Jaan, Amanush, Ghar, Barsaat Ki Ek Raat, Romance, Salma, Baazi, Pataal Bhairavi, Sweekar Kiya Maine, Justice Chaudhary, Biwi o biwi etc. She also appeared in many B-grade movies. She has played both village girl and glamorous lady in movies, but was not able to reach career heights which she dreamt about.
