Prem Nawas Biography

Prem Nawas is a noted actor and producer associated with Malayalam cinema, who has acted in lead roles and supporting roles in the black and white era of Malayalam cinema. He is better known as the younger brother of the iconic actor of Malayalam screen, Prem Nazir, the number one romantic hero in the golden era of Malayalam cinema. He also has striking similarities with his elder brother. Prem Nawas's real name was Abdul Wahab. He changed his name to Prem Nawas in synchronous with his brother’s name. Prem Nawas was the male protagonist in the first color film ever made in Malayalam, 'Kandam Becha Coat'. Nellu released in 1974 is another noted role.

 

Abdul Wahab was born in Chirayinkeezhu of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. Shahul Hamid and Asmabeevi were his parents. He is married to Sulochana. His son Prem Kishore has also debut Malayalam films, through the movies - 'Vacation' and 'Thaskara Puthran'. Though he was not so popular as his brother, he played quite a few memorable roles on big screen and also credited to have a few Malayalam classic songs pictured on him. He played Sarada’s younger brother in female oriented movie, Karthika. The popular romantic track - ‘Akkarayaanente Taamasam’ was pictured on him.

 

He made his film debut in the year 1956 playing the title role of Koodapirappu. Ambika made film debut through this film and played his heroine’s role. The movie also marked the debut of the most popular Malayalam lyricist – Vayalar Ramavarma. The movie was produced under the banner of Khadeeja Productions and directed by J. D. Thottan. Prem Nawaz, as hero, failed to make an impact, though Ambika was impressive in her debut flick. Yet he played numerous lead hero roles on silver screen later.

 

Kanyakumari, Preethi, Maanpeda, Ammu, Subeida, Atom Bomb, Veluthampi Dalawa etc are some of his noted appearances. He was last seen in Prem Nazeerine Kaanmanilla (1983), title role played by his brother Prem Nazir. He was mostly concentrated towards film production and has delivered many major hits as a film producer. He produced a few Malayalam movies, Agniputhri (1967), Neethi (1971), Thulaavarsham (1976), Poojakkedukkaatha Pookkal (1977) and Keni (1982).
