Poonam Dhillon Biography

Poonam Dhillon is one among the most beautiful faces of Bollywood during late 70’s and 80’s. She belongs to a Punjabi Sikh family. She was Femina Miss India 1977 before she was casted in the movie Trishul by Yash Chopra, opposite Sachin. The song ‘Gabucchi gabucchi gum gum’ was quite popular during those days.

Next year she was casted again in two movies directed by Yash Chopra – Kaala Pathar and Noorie. Both were critically well acclaimed and received by audience too. She was the solo heroine of movie Noorie opposite Ferook Sheik, which proved a milestone in her acting career. The song Noorie pictured on her was quite popular those days and its remix, after years ruled the pop remixes. The movie brought her the first Filmfare nomination too, for the best actress. She did around 100 movies in Hindi; a few hits and the rest flops.

In ‘Yeh wada raha’, she was casted against Rishi Kapoor and in the second part, after the accident Tuna Munim did her role as ‘Sunitha’. This movie is still remembered for charming look of this lady as well as R.D.Burman’s music.  Among all actors, she acted most frequently with Rajesh Khanna. Of 6 movies she acted with him, Red roses and the last one, Jai Shiv Shankar were critically well acclaimed though couldn’t make big hits. They paired in the movies of 80’s – Drard, Nishaan, Awam and Zamana.

She has also done role opposite Jackie Shroff in Karma and Tere meherbaniyan. She has done a few South Indian movies and a Bengali movie too. During early 90’s she slowly withdrew herself and did only a few character roles. In 1996, she did a guest appearance role for Judai and years later, she did the role of Madhavan’s mother in 13B. She did a small role in Dil bole harippa too.

Though she was not active in film field for the past one or two decades, she was busy in television serials. Kitty party of Zee TV was one such. She is now busy with her make-up business and doing social welfare programs like AIDS awareness, drug awareness and organ donation. A few movies noted for her contribution include Geraftar, Naam, Paley Khan and Kasam.
