Nitish Roy Biography

Nitish Roy is a renowned art director associated with Bollywood cinema. One of the finest art directors Indian cinema has ever witnessed he received three National Film Awards for Best Art Direction. Those movies are Kharij (1983), Mandi (1984) and Lekin (1991). Kharij is a Bengali film while the rest two are Bollywood films. He also received one Filmfare award for best art direction for 1990 film – Ghayal. Nitish has shown his versatility in both commercial films and offbeat movies. A hot favourite of directors of parallel cinema like Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and Govind Nihlani, he has been equally successful with commercial directors like Rajkumar Santoshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He has also worked with renowned female directors of the industry - Mira Nair and Gurinder Chadha.

He graduated from the Government Art College, Kolkata. After graduation he started his career as a commercial artist in an advertising agency. In the spare time he did interior design works for his friends and acquaintances. His designs for exhibition pavilions earned appreciations and awards also. Very soon he moved to film world where he designed sets for movies. A trendsetter, he rose to prominence in a short interval of time. Nitish has handled the roles of an art designer, production designer, and costume designer. He predominantly worked in Bollywood cinema, apart from English and Bengali language movies.

He was the art director of Oscar nominated film of Mira Nair - Salaam Bombay! He also handled the art for the famous Doordarshan series – Bharat Ek Khoj. Other noted movies include – Parinde, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Fanaa, Bride & Prejudice, Meine Gandhi ko nahin mara, Pukar, Halla Bol etc. He has also directed a few Bengali films. He is married to noted film director Nandita Roy, whose association with director Shiboprosad Mukherjee have given many commercial and critically appreciated Bengali films.
