Murad (hindi Actor) Biography

Murad was a Hindi film actor associated with classic black and white era of Bollywood. He is associated with Hindi cinema since early talkies. Since early 1940s he appeared in more than 100 Bollywood films, mostly playing character roles. He frequently plays a father, police officer/commissioner, judge and an emperor onscreen, and has played both positive and negative roles. Noted antagonist and character artist of Hindi screen, Raza Murad is his son, while Bollywood actresses Sonam, Zeenat Aman and Sanober Kabir are his great-nieces.

 

Murad was born in the year 1910 in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. He joined film industry in the early 1940s, when the entertainment industry was going through a transformation phase from silent movie to talkies. He has been a part of several B&W movies of the classic era. He made his acting debut in the 1943 film Najma directed by Mehboob Khan, and since then played over a hundred character roles onscreen. He played the role of Ashok Kumar’s father, despite being just one year older to him. Since then he became a permanent fixture of director Mehboob Khan’s films and he regularly appeared in the director’s movies in the 1940s and 1950s.

 

He appeared in Mehboob Khan’s movies such as Anmol Ghadi (1946), Andaz (1949), Aan (1952) and Amar (1954), playing the character roles of father, police officer, judge etc. His other noted film appearances include - Do Bigha Zamin (1953) as a cruel landowner, Devdas (1955) as Devdas's father etc. He played a king’s role in Hollywood film - Tarzan Goes to India (1962). He appeared in movies till later 1980s. During his last years he had already retired from films and took his last breath at his hometown.
