Miss Kumari Biography

Miss Kumari was a Mollywood actress in the earliest era of cinema. She was active during the decades – 1940’s to 1960’s. Her real name is Thresiamma Thomas and she belonged to Kottayam. She played lead heroine in landmark Malayalam movies - Nalla Thanka released in 1950 and Neela Kuyil released in 1954. Neela Kuyil was the first Malayalam movie to receive President’s medal. Nalla Thanka was actually a remake of the Tamil film Nalla Thangal (1935). She played the pivot role of Nalla Thanka in this movie. She acted in more than 50 films, in a career spanning to about 2 decades. She passed away in 1969 at a comparatively young age of 37.

Thresiamma was born on 1 June 1932 in Bharananganam of Kottayam District. Thomas and Eliyamma are her parents. She studied at Bharanganam Secret Hearts high school and alter joined the same school as a teacher. She married F.A.C.T engineer, Hormis Thaliath and the couple had three children. Vellinakshatram in 1949 marked her screen debut. The movie was not a success. But her acting talents were noticed. She shot to fame after playing the lead role in Nalla Thanka released in 1950. It was the first film made at Udaya Studio, Alapuzha produced by Kunchacko and K. V. Koshy.

It was followed by another landmark movie, Neela Kuyil where she was paired with legendary actor, Sathyan. Both the movie and its songs were highly popular. The popular track, Ellarum Chollanu was sync-lipped by Kumari. Altogether she had acted in more than 50 films. ,'Yachaki' and 'Navalokam' are other noted works. She was casted opposite Thikkurissi in Navalokam, which was a commercial hit. She has acted in a few Tamil movies and has won state award for best actress.
