Manju Borah Biography

Manju Borah is an award winning female film director and screenwriter from Assam who depicts the socio-cultural issues through celluloid. She is also a short story writer. She has served as the Jury member of many award functions including 61st National Film Awards 2013, where she served as the chairperson of Northern Region. She has also served as the Jury Member of mnay film festivals like Indian Panorama, IFFI 2007 and MAMI International Film Festival 2008.

Her Assamese film Akashitarar Kathare won Best regional film (Assamese) at 51st National Film Awards. In 2008, she won National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration for her movie, Aai Kot Nai. It was for the first time, an Asamese movie won the prestigious Nargis Dutt award and it was a saga of two communities — the Assamese and the Nagas.  She also received National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Mising (2012) for her movie – KO: YAD. Though award winning is an easy task for this celluloid story teller, she feels that it’s difficult to bring people to theaters to watch Assamese films.

A student of philosophy, she made her directorial debut through the movie - Baibhav, which won many awards. Her film Aakashitoraar Kothare fetched 3 National awards for her. This director is known for choosing woman oriented subjects for silver screen. In her opinion, though award winning gives personal satisfaction, she wants audience to watch movies so that Assamese film industry will survive.  Baibhav (1999), Anya Ek Yatra (2001), Akashitarar Kathare (2002), Laaj (2005), Joymoti (2006), Aai Kot Nai (2008),  Ruptirthar Yatri (2012) and Borolar Ghor are her directorial ventures up-to-date.
