Latha Rajinikanth is a philanthropist, film producer and former playback singer. But she is better known as the wife of the most popular star and legendary actor of Indian film industry, Rajinikanth. Both her daughters are into the film field - Aishwarya R. Dhanush and Soundarya Rajinikanth. Aishwarya R. Dhanush is a film director and classical dancer, who is married to popular actor and national award winner, Dhanush, the son of legendary filmmaker Kasthuri raja. Latha’s younger daughter Soundarya R. Ashwin is a graphic designer, producer and director, who made her debut as a director through Kochadaiyaan, directing her father.

Known as a philanthropist, Latha is the founder and correspondent of The Ashram, a Chennai-based school. The institution was started in the year 1991. She also serves as the chairperson of production company, Ocher Studios, started by her daughter Aishwarya. Latha was born in Chennai in 1958. She completed post-graduation in English literature from Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai in 1980. After graduation she did playback singing for a few movies in Tamil in the early 1980s. "Netru Indha Neram" from 'Tik Tik Tik (1981) and "Kadavul Ullamae" from Anbulla Rajinikanth (1984) are among her tracks.

She met Rajinikanth for the first time while doing PG at Ethiraj College for Women. They met each other in the sets of Thillu Mullu, a major breakthrough film in Rajini’s career. She went to see him for an exclusive interview for the college magazine. Very soon they got married on February 26, 1981 at Tirupati, three months before the release of the comedy classic.

Latha has a filmy legend. She belongs to the most popular filmy family of Tamil cinema. Not only that, she is the sister-in-law of noted actor and playwright, Y. G. Mahendra. Bollywood actress actress Vyjayanthimala is also her close relative. Actor Ravi Raghavendra is her brother and Anirudh Ravichander is her nephew. On 15 June 2015, a FIR has been filed against her for forging documents for the dispute related to satellite rights of 'Kochadaiiyan'.
