Kunchan Biography

Kunchan is a comedian of Malayalam cinema. He was most active in the era of 80’s. He along with Jagathy and Pappu has given numerous memorable comedy scenes to Malayalam. Till now, Kunchan has more than 650 films in his account. Though his roles are minor in most of the films, they are memorable ones. Apart from being a good comedian he has also acted as a character artist for quite number of movies.

Kunchan was born on 14 November 1952. His birth name is Mohan. He changed his name for movies. He entered celluloid during the black and white era of Malayalam. But his debut movie was a bit role in Tamil movie, Manaivi released in the year 1969. His first Malayalam movie was a suspense thriller, Rest house released in the year 1970 with Prem Nazir and Sheela in leading roles. Earlier he has done bit roles in Daham (1965) and Madatharuvi (1967). Then he became a part of Malayalam cinema. He got only minor roles during the black and white era of Malayalam movies. From 80’s onwards his work began to get noted.

A few of his movies during 70’s are Ajnathavasam (1973), Rahasya Rathri (1974), Kalyana Panthal (1975), Bharya Illatha Rathri (1975), Sathyathinte Nizhalil (1975), Criminals (1975), Chief Guest (1975), Kottaram Vilkkanundu (1975), Mucheettu Kalikkarante Makal (1975), Aaranya Kaandam (1975), Chumaduthaangi (1975), Cheenavala(1975), Amma (1976), Aayiram Janmagal (1976), Kamadhenu(1976), Anugraham (1977), Ormakal Marikkumo? (1977), Itha Oru Manushyan(1978), Bandhanam (1978) and Aadya Padam (1977). He was seen in servant’s role or bit roles in these movies. Yet a few roles need mention. Chammunni in Avesham, Potti in Itha Oru Manushyan, Kuttan in Randu Lokam, Shankunni Nair in Kamadenu and Madhu in Cheena vala are quite a few.

His most significant roles in the past 3 decades are His Highness Abdulla, Kadathanadan Ambadi, Aye auto, Yatra, Kakka, Ahimsa, Anubandham, Punjabi house, The king, Twenty: 20, Da thadiya, Simhasanam and Kottayam Kunjachan. Kunjan is married to Shobha and the couple has two daughters.
