Kumud Chhugani Biography

Kumud Chhugani is an Indian actress who worked in Bollywood movies in the 1960s. She played lead role in Bollywood classics, Poonam Ki Raat (1965), Laadla (1966), Vasana (1968), Shart (1969) etc. Though she worked with some of the lead actors of the era, she received only limited success, and her movies went unnoticed. She moved to character roles in the 1970s, and worked in Prem Nagar (1972), Bandhe Haat (1973), Aaj Ka Mahatma (1976) etc. She was introduced to the film scene as female lead by director Kishore Sahu through the horror suspense thriller, Poonam Ki Raat in 1965, where the director played a varey important character role. She was casted opposite Manoj Kumar in her debut film.

 

An Honors graduate and a Kathak & Bharathnatyam dancer, extremely beautiful Kumud was introduced to the big screen by director Kishore Sahu through the horror suspense thriller, Poonam Ki Raat in 1965. She played female lead opposite Manoj Kumar, and yet another newcomer Nandini completed the love triangle. Despite having a strong plot, the movie failed to get success at box office. The movie was given an Adults-Only certificate. Yet Kumud bagged a few more film roles in lead roles, and was active in the industry throughout 1960s. Kishore Sahu had signed her for a three-year contract, and hence she had to let go many good projects. It harmed her career a lot. Films like Laadla, Vaasna, and Shart made a fresh start and new innings in her career.

 

She played lead and parallel lead roles in movies like Poonam Ki Raat, Laadla (1966), Vasana, Shart etc, and many good songs are filmed on her. She worked in Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna movies in the 1970s, though in supporting roles. She was seen in Rajesh Khanna movie, Prem Nagar & Humshakal, and Amitabh Bachchan movie, Bandhe Haat. Holi Ayee Re, Moojrim, Tangewala, Resham Ki Dori, Shaitaan, Dhyanu Bhagat, Bhakti Mein Shakti, Chunaoti, Karmyudh, Kismatwala etc. Kismatwala in 1986 is probably her last film, and the actress is credited to 21 films. Shabash Gangaram is an incomplete film.
