Kamal Mitra Biography

Kamal Mitra was a famous actor associated with Bengali movies. In a career spanning to more than 4 decades since early 1940s, he played more than 90 different kinds of roles. He is best known for his association with Bengali character artist Chhabi Biswas and singer-actor Pahari Sanyal. His role as Uttam Kumar’s father in 1963 Bengali movie Deya Neya is most popular. He played numerous memorable character roles in the 1960s and later. During his first phase of acting career he has done mythological roles, of which Mahishasur in Mahishasur Badh and Daksha in Daksha Yagna are most popular. "Badar Munshi" in Louha Kapat is yet another famous role of Mitra in the classic era of Bengali cinema. He also performed in radio-plays.

He was born on December 9, 1912 in Burdwan, Bengal Province in British India. He hailed from the well-known Mitra family of Barddhaman. He was associated with numerous plays and jatra during his early phase. He worked with military for many years, and also worked in District Magistrate & Collector's Office in Barddhaman before he got active with silver screen. He joined military soon after completing his graduation. He was an avid reader who owned a huge collection of books, and later donated his vast collection to Nandan, the centre of films. His autobiography named as "Flashback" provides an insight to the era of Bengali cinema with which he was associated with.

His stint with military service has influenced him a lot throughout his life, and such traits were noticed in his film career, and acting style too. His voice and height, dialogue delivery skills etc attributed a lot to the character roles he played on big screen and theatre. He left film industry in the early 1980s. He passed away on August 2, 1993 in Kolkata, aged 80.
