Kalaranjini Biography

Kalaranjini is a popular character artist associated with south Indian cinema. She plays mother and sister kind of roles for television and cinema. She is associated with film industry since 1980s, and is the sister of famous south Indian actresses, Urvashi – known for playing character roles and Kalpana – the iconic female comedian of Malayalam cinema, who passed away most recently in 2016. The three sisters have witnessed a lot of turmoil in their personal and marriage lives and three have divorced once. Only Urvashi re-started her family life with a new person. Their brothers - Kamal Roy and Prince (Nandu of Layanam fame) have died in their younger ages. Both have acted in a few movies.

Kalaranjini was born in 1962 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. But she along with her siblings was brought up in Chennai. Both her parents were theater artists, and for the same reason their kids too joined the same field. She is the elder sister of actresses Urvashi and Kalpana. Kalaranjini started her film career at the age of 14, and she started off playing heroine roles in numerous movies. She played lead heroine of Swantham Enna Padam directed by Sreekumaran Thampi, her debut film. Kalaranjini played lead roles with top heroes of all south Indian languages in the early 1980s, before she got settled with her married life.

She got married at the age of 22 in 1985 when she was enjoying a celebrity status in south Indian cinema. But her marriage life ended in a bitter knot and it lasted only a few months. She was away from silver screen for many reasons and started her second innings in 1997. Once again she acted in Sreekumaran Thampi film, but playing a supporting role. Since then she is fully active in film and television industry. Sreekrishnapurathe Nakshatratilakkam, Annorikkal, Nandanam, Swapnakoodu, Kalyanaraman, Kochi rajavu, Puthiya mukham and How Old are you are some of her noted character roles.

She played one among the housewives of Sreekrishnapurathe Nakshatratilakkam – the movie known for its hilarious comedy scenes. She played Manju Warrior’s mother in How Old are you? She acted in more than 75 films. She along with her younger sisters forms the most popular and the celebrated trio-siblings of Malayalam cinema.
