K. Subash Biography

K. Subash was a filmmaker and screenwriter associated with Tamil and Hindi films. He has written screenplay of many hit Tamil and Hindi movies, and is quite familiar to Hindi movie audiences through the movie, Chennai Express starring Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan, for which he co-wrote the script. K. Subash belongs to a filmy family of Tamil cinema (also a few Hindi films), and is the son of R. Krishnan, of the famous duo filmmakers, Krishnan–Panju. He helmed Tamil super hit film “Chathriyan”. K. Subash was active in the cine industry since late 1980s, till he passed away in 2016 aged only 57. He died of kidney related problems.

 

He was born as Suresh Krishnan in 1959 into a filmy family of south India. He was born as the son of filmmaker Krishna of Krishnan–Panju duo. His sister Sona was married to famous film director A. Bhimsingh, who has directed Hindi and south Indian films. Cinematographers B. Lenin and B. Kannan are his nephews (sons of Sona and Bhimsingh). Bhimsingh later married actress Sukumari.

 

Subash started his career as an assistant to Mani Ratnam in the highly acclaimed film, Nayakan in the late 1980s. In 1988 he directed the movie, Kaliyugam marking his debut. His second film Chatriyan starring Vijayakanth was a blockbuster. He is still known for this movie in the industry. Ayul Kaidhi, Vaakumoolam, Pavithra, Abhimanyu, Ninaivirukkum Varai, Eazhaiyin Sirippil and Uthama Purushan are some of the Tamil movies which he directed later. He directed Bollywood movies – Brahma (1994) and Insan (2005), but both the movies flopped at box office. However he earned recognition co-scripting Chennai Express, Dilwale, Housefull 3, Sunday and Entertainment.
