K. Hariharan Biography

K. Hariharan is an award winning Indian filmmaker. He is also associated with theatre productions. He has directed films in Tamil, Marathi and Hindi languages. An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), his debut film, Ezhavathu Manithan released in Tamil won national award for best film in Tamil in 1983. The film was also nominated for Golden St. George (Best Film) at Moscow International Film Festival. He is currently a visiting faculty at FTII and the universities of Pennsylvania and Miami. He also served as director of L. V. Prasad Film and TV Academy, Chennai and the dean at Mahindra Ecole Centrale, Hyderabad.

 

K. Hariharan was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was born to Tamil couple, settled in Mumbai. His father was the vice-president of Eastman Kodak. His childhood and younger days were spent in Mumbai, where he completed his education. He graduated in commerce from Poddar College, Mumbai and later joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune to pursue his dreams of filmmaking. He studied screenwriting and film direction. Once he completed his course from FTII, along with his batchmates - Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Kamal Swaroop and their senior FTII alumni Mani Kaul, Hariharan formed "Yukt Films Co-operative" which made an experimental film in Marathi named Ghashiram Kotwal, based on the life of Nana Phadnavis.

 

Ghashiram Kotwal based on the Marathi play with the same name opened to critical acclaim and was showcased at Berlin International Film Festival in 1978. It was again screened in 2014 at the festival inn. On the insistence of legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram, he made several films for children, before he made Ezhavathu Manithan. He is currently settled in Chennai with his family.
