K. B. Sundarambal Biography

K. B. Sundarambal was an Indian singer who was noted for her vibrant voice and singing skills. She also took part in the Indian Independence Movement and served as a member of the state legislature in India.

 

She was born on 11th October 1908 in Kodumudi near Erode in Tamil Nadu. Her mother was Balambal and her brother Kanagasabapathy earned very little for their living. During her younger age her family was struggling for money that she sang in the train and received tips from passengers. She made her debut on the stage in 1917 when she was nine years old. Then she did many lead roles in plays like Pavalakodi, Harichandra, Valli Thirumanam, etc.

 

In most of the plays she acted with the actor S. G. Kittappa. They both fell in love with each other and married in 1927. However just after five years of their marriage Kittappa died prematurely in 1933. She was in dormant state for few years. Then she started to sing and act in the films. She performed as Avvaiyar and this was a huge success.

 

Some of her films were Thiruvilayadal, Karaikal Ammaiyar, Kandan Karunai, Auvaiyar, Manimekalai, Poompuhar, Sathi Leelai, Mahakavi Kalidas, Uyir Mel Asai, etc. Some of her famous songs are Iraiva Un Pughal Paaduven, Naalellaam Unthan Thirunaale, Vazhkai Ennum Odam, Ayyane Anbarkku Meyyane, Paavi Yen Piranthen, Maasindri Kulamaadhar, etc.

 

She has recorded many gramophone discs supporting the Indian freedom struggle. She took an oath to wear khadi always. In 1951 she was nominated on behalf of Congress party to the Madras state Legislative Council.

 

She received Tamil Isai Perarignar award in 1964 from Tamil Isai Sangam. She received Padma Shri Award from the Government of India in 1970. She also received two National Awards for her performance. She died on 15th October 1980 at her age of 71.
