Jyothi Lakshmi Biography

Jyothi Lakshmi was a film actress associated with south Indian movies. She has appeared in many movies since 1960s, playing lead and supporting roles. She has worked in movies belonging to all the four south Indian languages, and in Hindi. She was a trained dancer, and has done similar kind of roles on screen. Her sister Jayamalini also worked in movies in the 1970s and 1980s. Her daughter Jyothi Meena has also appeared in films. As an actress in a supporting role, Jyothi Lakshmi is best remembered for the movies - Thedi Vandha Mapillai and Periya Edathu Penn. She passed away on 8 August 2016 in Chennai, aged 67.

 

Jyothi Lakshmi was born on 2 November 1948. She marked her film debut with Periya Idathu Penn in 1963, and turned a busy actress in the 1970s. Since then, in a career spanning to more than 5 decades, she has appeared in more than 130 movies. She appeared in many commercial movies of 1970s, with some good songs, and she exhibited her skills as a trainer dancer too. She has also appeared in several movies, which can be tagged as content oriented and women centered.

 

She started off as a teenager in the early 1960s playing supporting roles in all south Indian language films and Bollywood. She made brief appearance in Bollywood movies such as Payal Ki Jhankar (1968), Nai Roshni (1967), Pistolwali (1972) and Naag Mani (1987). Towards the end of her career, she was quite busy in television and also did mother roles on big screen. Kavalai Vendam in 2016 was her last release in Tamil. She has been a part of Tamil television shows such as Velan, Vasantham, Annamalai and finally Valli. She was married and had one son and one daughter.
