Joshiy Biography

Joshiy is a very popular director and hit maker of Malayalam cinema. Since 80’s, he has delivered numerous hits. In 2008 he directed Twenty:20 bringing together almost all the top stars of Malayalam with Mammootty and Mohanlal playing the main lead. Till now, Twenty:20 is the highest grosser of Malayalam cinema if inflation figures are not counted. Mammootty has worked for 32 films, Mohanlal played 11 and Suresh Gopi 15 under Joshiy’s direction.

Joshiy debut Malayalam with Tiger Salim in 1978. The movie starred less known actors that time - Ravi Kumar and Subha in the lead. Till then he is active in the industry. During the era of 80’s, he fully concentrated on Prem Nazir. In the later half he began to work with new stars of Malayalam, Mohanlal and Mammootty. They were not big stars that time and Joshiy’s action movies have played a significant role in their career to place them as big stars during early 90’s.

In 2011, he directed Christian Brothers that starred three super stars together – Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Dileep. Apart from Christian Brothers, Lokpal (2013) and Run baby run (2012) were also successes at box office where he worked with Mohanlal. As a director, his big hit is of course Twenty 20. He has a good success record with superstars of Malayalam and majority of them are action oriented. Major hits with Mammootty are Nirakoottu, New Delhi, No.20 Madras Mail, Shyama, Kuttettan, Dinarathrangal, Mahayanam, Kauravar, Dhruvam, Nair Saab and Sainyam. Major hits were doing the decade of 90’s and late 80’s. However their association during 2000’s couldn’t bring the magic of 90’s. They worked together in the movies - Pothan Vava (2006) and Nasrani. Similar setbacks were noticed with other stars too, in the early 2000’s. Yet with middle 2000’s, he was back to track with movies like Runway and Lion, both with Dileep. This time too, he worked on action movies only. It seems he was interested in this particular topic only. Yet it’s to be noticed that he is the real star director of action movies of Malayalam and has brought the best of megastars too.

His successful movies with Suresh Gopi are Dhruvam, Bhoopathi, Lelam and Pathram. Naran, Mamnazhakaalam, Naduvaazhikal and January oru orma are the biggest hits of Mohanlal with Joshiy. He remade Khoobsurat to Malayalam with Nadia Moidu reprising the role of Rekha. They worked together in one more project - Onningu Vannengil in which Mammootty played the lead.
