Joseph Thaliath Jr. Biography

Joseph Thaliath Jr. was an Indian film director known for directing Malayalam and Tamil films in the era of early talkies. Along with F. Nagoor, produced and directed the film Gnana Soundari. The film was released in 1948 and was a great success. In 1950, he wrote, produced and directed Ithaya Geetham. Noted actors, C. L. Anandan and Jaishankar were introduced to the screen by Joseph Thaliath Jr. he introduced Anandan through 1960 film, Vijayapuri Veeran. Kathal Padhuthum Paadu, Vilakketriyaval, Iravum Pagalum, Mallika etc are other south Indian releases. He also directed Hindi films – Jeevan Tara (dubbed version of Ithaya Geetham), Payal and Teen Dost.

 

He hailed from a Christian family in Kerala. His father worked as High Court Judge in Thiruvananthapuram. Soon after graduation, he moved to Chennai, then known by the name Madras to pursue a career in film making. He was deeply interested in films and film making. But it was not approved by his father. He worked as an assistant director under S. Soundararajan for a few years in Chennai, before he turned a full-fledged director and producer of Tamil films. He accepted the partnership of F. Nagoor, a filmmaker and a partner of Newtone studios in Chennai. They together produced and directed many movies of which, Gnana Soundari in 1948 is their major work. The movie was highly successful at box office.

 

He established his own studio and named it as "Citadel Studios". Then he started his journey as an independent film producer and director. Ithaya Geetham in 1950 was his first film as an independent filmmaker, and he scripted the film also. With 1950s, he made movies in Malayalam and Hindi. Yet he was predominantly associated with Tamil cinema.
