John Edathattil Biography

John Edathattil, also known as John E is a screenwriter and film director of south Indian film industry. He concentrates on Tamil and Malayalam movies. In a career spanning to more than 25 years, he has written some powerful film scripts. Some of his noted Malayalam screenplays include - Vyooham, Gandhari, Soorya Manasam, Highway, Mayilpeelikkavu, Priyam, Chanakyan etc. Most of his scripts belong to action genre and he was most active in the era of 1990s. He also co-scripted the cult classic Tamil film Guna and Kuruthipunal both starring Kamal Hassan. John has played diversified roles in film industry including acting, direction and producer. He served as the Executive Producer for Kamal's Bollywood film Chachi 420.

He was born in Alapuzha in 1958 into a Christian family to Simon Antony and Marykutty Antony. He graduated in commerce and started his career as an accountant. His passion to movies and stories prompted him to quit the job and join film line, which he succeeded. He was interested in script writing since young. Known for his association with Kamal Hassan, he co-scripted many of Kamal movies such as Chanakya, Guna, Kuruthipunal etc. He also played the pivot role of Narasimhan in the movie, Kuruthipunal, which was India's official entry for the 68th Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category.

Apart from films, he has also scripted and directed several documentaries for some noble causes.  He scripted Shyamaprasad’s telefilm - Venalinte Ozhivu for Doordarshan Malayalam. Nakshatra Kunju, Decemberile Adithi etc are a few more scripts he wrote for Malayalam television. He was seen in Shyamaprasad’s television soap – Shamanathalam. Apart from films, television serials and documentaries, he has also been associated with ad films as a producer and director.
