Jaidev Biography

Jaidev was a famous music composer of Bollywood who has given music to Hum Dono, Reshma aur Shera, Gaman, Ankahee and Gharonda. He is one among the most versatile music directions of Indian cinema who has won National awards thrice. Movies are Gaman, Reshma aur shera and Ankahee. Hit songs include Allah tero naam, Mein zindagi ke saath and Abhi na jaao of Hum Dono, Seene mein jalan and Aap ki yaad aathi rahe of Gaman, Yeh dil aur unki nigahon ke saaye of Prem Parbath, Tu chanda mein chandini of Reshma aur Shera, Raat bhi hai kuch of Mujhe jeene do, Do deewane and ek deewana of Gharonda, Raghubar tumako of Ankahee and Chale jaa rahe hain of Kinara Kinara. Though majority of his movies flopped at box office, his songs never went unnoticed. His place is among those directors who blended well unique folk tunes with Indian classical music. He has also composed poems done by Harivansh Rai Bachchan with the name ‘Madhusala’; songs were sung by versatile singer Manna Dey.  

He was the assistant composer of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan when he gave music to Aandhiyan and Humsafar. Later from the movie Taxi Driver, he served S.D.Burman as assistant. His first movie as music director was Joru ka bhai followed by Anjali. Both these movies of Chetan Anand became hits, both musically and commercially. But it was Hum Dono of Dev Anand that brought him to lime light. All its songs became big hits, particularly the romantic number sung by Asha Bhosle and Bhajan sung by Lata Mangeshkar. After that he gave a handful of lovely songs to music lovers, though he has restricted himself of giving less number of songs.

His other works include Ek hi reetha, Hamare gham se mat khelo, Anjali, Jiyo aur jeene do, Amar Jyothi, Faasla, Andolan, Sampoorna Dev darshan, Wohi baat, Aathish, Aazadi pachiz baras ki, Raam Nagri and Do boond pani. He was unmarried till he died in 1987 and lived with his sister. He was 68 that time. Jaidev is always remembered for the breathless tunes of mountains that contributed as assets to music history of Indian number. Number may be a few, yet each gem is just extra ordinary!
