Jagannatha Varma Biography

Jagannatha Varma is a veteran Malayalam actor known for character and supporting roles and he is an accomplished Kathakali artist as well. Noted film director Viji Thampi is his son-in-law. His son Manu Varma is also an actor who appears in movies and television serials in supporting roles. His negative role in Mammootty starrer New Delhi is one of his most memorable roles in the 1980s. Yodha, Adwaitham, Lelam and Pathram are his memorable roles in the 1990s. He has been a police officer before joining the entertainment field.

 

He was born in Cherthala of Alappuzha district in the year 1939. He has four siblings. His childhood days were spent at his hometown where he completed his school education. He graduated in science from M.G. College. He mastered Kathakali from Pallippuram Gopalan Nair Asan. He married Santha Varma and the couple has two children. His son is a popular Malayalam actor Manu Varma, while his daughter is married to film director Viji Thampi. Varma joined the Kerala Police Force in 1963, long before he became active in movies and acting. He retired from service as Superintendent of police.

 

He has also played the role of a police officer in many of his movies and mostly he is associated with serious types of roles. A few of those roles include negative shaded ones as well. Nowadays he is less active in movies and was seen for the last time in Rebecca Uthup Kizhakkemala portraying the role of Bishop. Red Chillies, Inspector Garud, Kuttettan, Sargam, Vietnam colony, Kottayam Kunjachan, College kumaran, Yodha, Adwaitham, Lelam, Pathram and Adimakal Udamakal are some of his noted appearances.
