I V Sasi Biography

Irruppam Veedu Sasidaran, shortly known as I V Sasi is a popular director of Malayalam from middle 70’s. He has contributed some landmark movies to Malayalam from 70’s to early 90’s. His name is always mentioned among the great directors of Malayalam who have given new definitions to cinema. His films are known for their uniqueness and always given a stamp of his talent and directorial style.

He is the director of the controversial movie, ‘Avalude raavukal’, the time when no heroine was bold enough to enact the role of a sex worker. The movie dubbed to several languages including Hindi and Tamil was the second Malayalam movie to be given ‘Adults only’ certificate. But this movie is always regarded as a family drama with super hit songs sung by Janaki. He later married the heroine of the movie Seema, with whom he has worked for 30 movies. It was during the shooting of the climax of his movie ‘Kolilakkam’ remake of Yash Chopra’s Waqt, that actor Jayan witnessed an accidental death. He has done about 170 films in his career and now, he has taken a short break from the industry.

I. V. Sasi started his film career as an art director and later as an assistant director. He wore the cap of a director when he was just 27 and his debut movie, ‘Utsavam’ released in the year 1975. The movie was a surprise hit. In 1976, he won Kerala state awards best art director award for the movie – Anubhavam. He has won best director award once for Mammootty’s supre hit movie ‘Mrigaya’ in 1989. In 1988, his periodic movie ‘1921’ won Popular movie award and ‘Aalkkoottathil Thaniye’ released in the year 1984 won second best film at Kerala state awards. He has won Filmfare best director award for Eetta and Itha Ivide Vare and best film award for Itha Ivide Vare, Trishna, 1921 and Ee naadu.

He has directed two Bollywood movies too – Man ka angan, Mithun Chakravarthy’s Patita and Rajesh Khanna’s Anokha Rishta. His other big hits of Malayalam are – Ayalkaari, Abhinandanam, Vadakaykku oru hridayam, Iniyum Puzha Ozhukum, Ezham Kadalinakkare, Adiyozhukkukal, Karimbinpoovinakkare, Aavanazhi, Bhoomika, Inspector Balram, Anubhavangale Nandi, Angadi, Neelagiri, Devasuram, Symphony, Meen, Ahimsa, Thusharam, John Jaffer Janardhanan, Sindoora Sandhyakk Maunam, Iniyenkilum, Alauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum, Aa nimisham, Aashirwadam and Oongal.

I. V. Sasi died at his home in Saligramam, Chennai on 24 October 2017 at the age of 69, due to a massive heart attack.
