Gunasekhar Biography

Gunasekhar is a successful screenwriter and director associated with many big budget films and blockbusters starring the biggest actors of Telugu film industry. He is the filmmaker of several blockbuster hits like Ramayanam (1997), Sogasu Chooda Tharamaa, Choodalani Vundi and Okkadu, apart from highly acclaimed movies shown at film festivals. Ramayanam won National Film Award for Best Children's Film in 1997. Arjun was screened at the International Film Festival of India 2004. However his Magnus opus Rudhramadevi (2015) disappointed audience and critics and was an average grosser. The movie saw actress Anushka Shetty in one of her finest roles till now, post another expensive film - Bahubali.

 

He was born on 2 June 1964 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. He was a movie buff and an avid reader since childhood. Later he wrote a few short stories and novel in Telugu literature. Yet he achieved stardom as a hit and talented filmmaker. As he showed inclination towards cinema, he moved to Chennai to pursue his dreams. He started off as an assistant writer under Kasi Viswanadh and later worked as an Assistant Director under many veteran directors of the industry. He also worked as an associate director of talented Ram Gopal Varma.

 

Lathi (1992) marked his film debut as a screenwriter and direction and the movie won Andhra Pradesh state awards for best debut director. Following the success of the movie, he directed Sogasu Chooda Tharama (1995) starring Naresh and Indraja, which was a blockbuster. He made Epic Ramayanam (1997 film) with a bunch young kids and the movie won a National award. The success of Choodalani Vundi (1998), Mrugaraju (2001), Manoharam (2000), Arjun(2004) and Sainikudu(2007) made him one of the leading directors of present times. Three of his films have won Nandi awards for best film – Okkadu, Manoharam and Sogasu Chooda Tharamaa. Okkadu earned him Best director award too. He was the first director to introduce DTS sound to Telugu movies.
