Govindbhai Patel Biography

Govindbhai Patel is a popular filmmaker associated with Gujarati cinema. As a film producer, Dhola Maru and Desh Re Joya Dada Pardesh Joya are his most successful films. Jode Rehjo Raj, Saibo Sava Lakhno, Sejal Sarju, Hiran Ne Kanthe, Patan thi Pakistan, Taro Malak Mare Jovo Chhe, Gamma Piyariyu ne Gamma Sasariyu, Dholi Taro Dhol Vage etc are other noted works. As a film producer, Dhola Maru (1983) was his first super hit film. He founded GN Films Production Company in the early 1980s. Noted film directors duo Abbas-Mustan known for suspense thrillers, started their career under him. He passed away on 15 April 2015 at Vadodara aged 72. He was suffering from cancer for a long time.

Govindbhai Patel was born on 11 January 1943 Keshod, Gujarat. Patel was married to Chandrikaben and had three sons and a daughter. He worked as an administrator of a cinema hall, before entering cinema as a film maker. He entered films in the early 1980s as a Gujarati film producer under GN Films banner. He tasted success for the first time through the movie, Dhola Maru (1983). Later he delivered many successful films to Gujarati cinema. Dhola Maru and Desh Re Joya Dada Pardesh Joya are his major hits.

Noted film director duo of Bollywood – Abbas-Mastan has worked as assistant directors under him in Gujarati film industry. They got their first break through the movie -Sajan tara sambharana, which turned to be a major hit. The project was initially rejected by Patel. “Desh Rey Joya Dada Pardes Joya” is one of his major hits as a producer cum director which earned 10 crores at box office in late 1990s and it also inspired other film makers to make similar social backdrop films. It was a time when Gujarati cinema was going through a worst time in the recent times.
