George Baker Biography

George Baker is an Indian politician and film actor associated with Bengali and Assamese films since the late 1970s. Joined BJP in 2014, he contested Lok sabha elections 2014 as a BJP candidate from Howrah constituency. He is a parliamentarian appointed by the president under Article 331. He made his film debut in 1974 with the Assamese film, Chameli Memsaab, which made him matinee-idol. Later Baker went on to play numerous roles as main lead and currently he portrays character roles.

He is an Anglo-Indian born in Tezpur, Assam in 1946. His initial education was done in Lucknow. A sports person since school days, he has been a National level junior in Boxing and Swimming. Though he pursued Engineering in Assam Engineering College, he discontinued studies following his father’s death. Later he did a 2-year Engineering course at Permanent Way Engineering and joined Indian railways in engineering department. After two years he quit the job and set up a business.

Again his career took another U-turn when he joined film industry in 1974. He made his film debut as a lead actor through Assamese film, Chameli Memsaab in 1974. Binita Borgohain played the female lead in the film, based on a short story by journalist and writer, Nirode Choudhury. The film was a critical and commercial success. Thus Baker turned a matinee-idol. The movie won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese and later played the same role in its Bengali version as well.

Following his success in films, he went on to star in numerous Assamese and Bengali films. He got associated with theatre and television also. He has acted in one Bollywood film – Parineeta in 2005 and played the memorable role of Mr. Ramsey in Bengali blockbuster - Bhooter Bhabishyat. Currently he is associated with politics.
