Divya Unni Biography

Divya Unni is a successful actress of Malayalam during the second half of 90’s and her most memorable performances include Pranaya Varnangal, Soorya putran, Ayushman bhava, Karunyam, Varnapakittu, Katha nayakan, Oru maravathur kanavu, Kalyana sauganthikam, Churam, Nakshatrangal parayathirunnathu, Usthad and Friends. She is a successful classical dancer as well. She has acted as the heroine as well as younger sister of Mohan Lal in the movies Varna pakittu and Ustaad respectively and her most successful movie opposite Megastar Mammootty was Oru maravathur kanavu. Yet, it’s for the negative shaded role of Pranayavarnangal in 1998, she is remembered most. Actually the role put a negative shade on her fans too! Pranayavarnangal was a huge hit at campuses for its fresh storyline and songs and her role as a naughty friend was critically well appreciated.

Divya Unni debut Malayalam as a child artist in Kamal’s movie ‘Pookkalam varavai’. Later she concentrated on Doordarshan serials and earned a good name too. She was a popular child artist during 1993-1994. Her Kalathilakam provided her an easy way to reach movies, the time when directors search for new faces through school and college art festivals. Many heroines like Kavya Madhavan and Manju Warrior have entered Mollywood in similar way. She played the supporting actress role in Saubhagyam. As heroine her released movie was ‘Kalyana Saugandhikam’ (1996) opposite Dileep and the movie was commercially successful too. She was only 15 that time. Opposite Dileep, she has acted in ‘Nee Varuvolam’ and ‘Varnapakittu’ in 1997. In Varnapakittu, Dileep played supporting actor role as Divya’s husband. Mohan lal played the main lead. Same year, she worked in Bharathan’s last movie ‘Churam’ as Manoj.K.Jayan’s wife.

Among all her heroes, she was most successful with Jayaram and they were paired together in movies like Soorya putran, Ayushman bhava, Karunyam and Katha nayakan. Yet in the multistar cast movie Friends, she played the role of younger sister of Jayaram. She was casted opposite Mukesh in movies like Friends, Nakshatrangal parayathirunnathu etc. She has acted in a few Tamil movies as well – Sabhash, Kannan Varuvaan, Vedham, Palayathu amman and Aandan adimai.

Her other Malayalam movies include The truth, Ayiram meni and Mark Antony. She got married in 2002 and migrated to US. Though away from movies, she never left her real passion of dance. Now also she performs live in stage shows. Now she has returned back to cinema with a classical dance number for the movie ‘Musafir’.
